At STAL, our decades of experience are what drive our quality and craftsmanship, ensuring our patterns are built to last. We have an in-depth understanding of how to build a pattern that meets your exact requirements:
- Understanding the attributes of the material, and building in allowances for shrinkage accordingly.
- Adding draft allowance to facilitate easy removal of the pattern from the mould, taking into account factors such as part complexity, and the impact of hand or machine moulding.
- Adding a machining allowance.
- Adding distortion allowance to counter-act any stresses in the material that may induce distortions in the cast during the cooling of the mould.

Vintage steam train chimney for a castings company
We were asked to produce a pattern for a replacement chimney for a vintage steam train. The equipment was produced by firstly creating a 3D CAD model and then CNC machining the cope and drag patterns and core boxes on our large-scale 5-axis CNC machine.
Houses of Parliament roof tiles
We were asked to manufacture pattern equipment for the replacement cast iron roof tiles for the renovation of The Houses of Parliament.
Pattern for a decorative cast-iron plaque
Set into the footway of Goldington Crescent Gardens, formerly known as Pancras Wash. The heritage plaque indicates the flow and location of London’s largest river, the Fleet. The appearance of the plaque mimics that of a drain cover.
